Sponsorship – Beyond Mentorship

Finding your sponsors is not the same as finding your mentors. Mentorship offers guidance, perspective, and feedback based on experience. Sponsorship opens doors, creates opportunities, and advocates for you in rooms where you cannot enter alone. Mentor shows you what the path ahead can look like. Sponsor helps you get on the path.

Cindu’s story: From feedback to sponsorship

You do not rise by chance; you rise by the people who put you on the path.”

Cindu left her promotion review stunned. She went in feeling prepared for the next level. She had delivered strong projects. Her ratings were consistently high. Her manager supported her. Yet she did not grow to the next level.

She asked for feedback, listened carefully, and kept improving. Still, she felt something was missing.

“What could I have missed?” She vented to her spouse.
“Sponsorship,” came his pat reply
“But I have been having a mentor,” Cindu puzzled
“Doesn’t help if your mentor can’t influence the promotion panel,” her spouse pointed.

The penny dropped for her. She needed someone who could vouch for her work and create meaningful opportunities inside the organization. She realized sponsorship rarely appears without intention. So she acted.

Cindu sought a sponsor. She realized that earning a sponsor requires work. She did three things

  • Pitch her strengths: She shared how she can add value through her experience
  • Connect frequently: She kept the potential sponsor updated with ideas, progress, and short plans
  • Give to gain: She volunteered on a short project to demonstrate capability and reliability

Soon, the sponsor recognized her efforts. He assigned her for a high-visibility project, coached her promotion presentation, spoke about her work to key decision makers. He advocated for her outside beyond her team. As a result, Cindu earned the promotion in the next cycle.

Visibility, advocacy, and strategic opportunities often determine who advances. Sponsorship is a partnership: you deliver results, and your sponsor amplifies them to the right audiences.

For your reflection

  • What one action will you take today to seek sponsorship?
  • Which strengths will you highlight to a potential sponsor?
