Question to connect
A kindergarten teacher had one of her students come to her in tears. The teacher looked at the child and asked, “Do you want to be hugged, helped, or heard?” Many times, we think we understand others, but often we are mistaken. Some need emotional consolation (hug) at that moment. Others may need practical guidance (help). Perhaps many need an outlet for self-expression (to be heard). It is better to ask or understand rather than assume.
“Don’t make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.” — Don Miguel Ruiz
Executive presence
You are not demonstrating executive presence if you are:
- Ignoring the pulse of your team and failing to respond to it.
- Not reliable with your key stakeholders and peers.
- Always attributing your difficulties to the environment.
.”Executive presence is the art of being trusted, followed, and respected.” — Sylvia Ann Hewlett
Pivoting
Pivoting means embracing change. When you feel stuck, you work with a coach who helps you pivot. Your coach helps you see what is not obvious. You put your energy into finding new ways of being and doing. Pivoting is about recognizing the need for change and adapting yourself to it.
“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” — Socrates
