Rungs of a ladder | Fitment vs competence | Backward understanding

Rungs of a ladder

You may not see the rungs of the ladder that the person next to you had to climb to stand beside you. What would have taken one rung for you would have been an arduous climb for that person. Many might have navigated through broken ladders, struggles, and obstacles, and yet managed to be where they are now. All you see is the rung on which they stand now. To understand them, you need to see the unseen and acknowledge their struggles.

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” – Harper Lee

Fitment vs competence

You could be technically competent. You could be the person who is most skilled at matching the job description. Yet you may not survive in a role. Aptitude and skills developed in one setting may not help you thrive in another setting. The systems in which you operate and your ability to handle the people dynamics matter more than your competence.

“A bad system will beat a good person every time.” – Edward Deming

Backward understanding

How can you make your present grief more bearable?

  • Reflect on a difficult event from your past
  • Revisit how you felt in that moment.
  • Recognize how it may not have made sense then but does now.

Life’s stories offer hope, revealing the meaning behind each event that shaped the choices you’re living out today.

“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards” – Soren Kierkegaard
