Timing of feedback matters

Timing of feedback matters. Even a well-intentioned feedback falls flat with wrong timing. Before you speak, ask yourself:

  • Will I have the person’s full attention?
  • Am I feeling emotionally balanced?
  • Are there other present who shouldn’t be?

Getting the timing right is just as important as the content of the feedback itself. Even the best feedback can miss the mark if delivered at the wrong moment.

“Feedback, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish growth—but it must also fall at the right season.” – Adapted from Frank A. Clark

Influence story

He proposed his idea to many people but met resistance. Some were preoccupied with their concerns, some doubted its potential, and others criticised its flaws. So he changed the approach. He stopped pitching and started listening – asking questions, understanding what mattered to them. He then shared what they needed to hear. Interest grew, confidence followed. They offered suggestions and support to help him move forward.

Speak to what moves them—not just what matters to you. It’s not only about what you say, but about what they’re ready to hear.

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” — Stephen R. Covey

Five-person system

Ever set a goal and watch it quietly fade away? The Five-person system is a powerful way to hold yourself accountable to your goals. Share your goal with the following five people and keep them updated on your progress

Someone who truly admires your work and capabilities
A person you deeply respect
Anyone who has already achieved the goal you are pursuing
Someone who has constructively challenged you
The person who genuinely cares about your well-being

Each person will offer a unique form of support – nudging, encouraging, guiding, critiquing, and helping you stay committed to your path. Who’s in your five-person system?

“Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher.” — Oprah Winfrey
